Light backpack and very breathable! I'm very pleased with my purchase

  2. SS · June 30, 2026

Wow, worst BD purchase ever, folds 90 degrees above lumbar region when packed and is essentially worthless. The only thing worse was the subsequent poor customer service who have wasted an inordinate amount of my time. Stay away from this brand. What a joke

Great backpack for day hikes. Wish some of the materials used were more focused on durability than saving weight

Nice light pack with good storage options. Lacks some climate versatility. Best suited for cold weather climates or looks nice enough to use as a casual tourist pack. Not well suited for sweat in warmer climates. First short hike with this in warm, humid climate left a good portion of the vented back panels soaked in sweat. This left me missing my similarly-sized trampoline style frame pack that while heavier, has far superior support and ideal ventilation for the back panel for similar price.

This holds the items that work well for a casual hike and a more complex hike - super excited to get more miles on it to confirm how rugged it is

So handy! You don't even realize it's on.

I am 54 years old. I have lead countless big game hunts, both on horseback and foot. I have spent my whole life in the most rugged and isolated environments. I am a Flight Surgeon with the US Special Forces, responsible for the most precious blood. If you want peace of mind, knowing your family is using the proper equipment, enabling them to do dangerous things safely, you want Black Diamond. I’m too old, experienced, and impatient to deal with much else. Major Biesinger US Army.

I really love my new bag, very breathable on my back which is amazing because I produce so much heat. I use my bag everyday.

  9. Nick S. · June 14, 2024

If it only has ice axe carrying capabilities, this would be a perfect pack

  10. Alexis P. · June 2, 2024

    It’s a little bit small

  11. Nathan B. · May 31, 2024

Thoughtfully built - it has a semi-rigid back support, with lightweight but durable fabrics. The shoulder straps with pockets are really nice. This is my go to pack for longer days out, like a mountain summit or a day with big temperature shifts that I need to pack some layers.

The only reviews I find meaningful are those in which the reviewer first explains himself/herself. They're a longer read, but much more insightful. So here goes. I hope this aids your purchase decision. I'm a full-time hiking guide in Utah canyon country, the Italian Alps, and the Canary Islands. I've long preferred ventilated trampoline-suspension daypacks with aluminum frames—specifically The North Face Hydra 26 and 38. But I began stalking the BD Pursuit 30 online shortly after its introduction. I was particularly intrigued by the oversized hipbelt—a feature that contradicts current trends. When I found the Pursuit 30 discounted at Tenerife Outdoor (San Cristobal de La Laguna, Tenerife), I spontaneously bought it. My reasons were: it's lighter than my TNF daypacks, allows quicker/easier access to contents, requires much less space in my wheeled luggage when travelling internationally, and has larger capacity than my Hydra 26. Plus, trying it on gave me the impression it would work much better than other frameless daypacks I've experimented with. I'm 6 feet tall and weigh 165 lbs. My Pursuit men's size large fits me perfectly. After trying the Pursuit for a full week of recon hiking, I continued using it every day while co-leading a group of hikers in the Canaries. We just finished. In my opinion, the Pursuit 30 carries superbly. The body-hugging design and tubular/vertical shape create the sense that it's actually part of me rather than something I'm carrying, which I appreciated on the Canaries' steep, narrow, very exposed trails. Once I've put the Pursuit on and adjusted the fit, I never have to fuss with it. It stays dialed-in. And it's blessedly silent: no squeaks, chirps, or creaking. Because it's frameless, I thought the Pursuit might slouch out and away from my back when loaded (total pack weight of 12 lbs, including a 2-liter CamelBak Crux hydration system). But it doesn't. It hugs my spine from tailbone to neck. And it rides high: well above my butt. I've read criticisms of the Pursuit that I think are ridiculous and/or trivial. For example, that it should have a roll-top closure. I disagree. I like the clam-shell zip opening because it exposes more of the contents and is faster/easier, less finicky. I've also read criticism of the shoulder-strap pockets. Again, I disagree. The BD designers obviously sweated and tested all the details of the Pursuit, including the pockets, which work just fine for me. Finally, I've read complaints that it bounces when running. I say: If you want to run, you shouldn't be hauling 30 liters of gear. The Pursuit 30 isn't a runner's pack. It's a hiker's pack with running-pack inspired engineering. Sure, my back stays sweaty while wearing the Pursuit, unlike when I carry a ventilated, trampoline-suspension frame pack. But, to my surprise, this hasn't bothered me in the breezy, 80°F conditions I've been hiking. The pack and my shirt always dried quickly during rest breaks. Conclusion: I'll continue using my ventilated TNF daypacks for my Utah hiking/guiding when I carry heavier loads due to colder weather, or when I need back-ventilation during hotter weather. But the BD Pursuit 30 will be the only pack I take to Europe for cooler weather, big-mountain hiking/guiding. Thanks, BD, for this innovative pack. It makes my trail life a little easier and more enjoyable. And the orange color is brilliant for photography.

Absolutely love the double front straps to displace weight even more than the standard 1 strap.

The magic is in integrating the Distance shoulder straps and waist storage system with a 30 liter pack. Fast and light missions, 30 plus miles a day easy!

One major flaw - the pockets on the shoulder straps aren't big enough to securely carry a regular size modern smart phone (i. e. Samsung S21). Big miss, in my opinion. Either add more security, like a draw-cord to tighten the opening, to the one large open pocket or make the zippered pocket just a little bigger. When I used the pack, I had to keep my phone in a pocket in my running shorts, which was far from ideal, and when my wife used the pack, she lost her phone (but luckily she found it later in the day) because it fell out of the only pocket big enough to fit it. Another minor flaw - no ice axe / gear loop. For the advertised uses of this pack, seems like a must-have. Otherwise, this pack worked well for me on a long-distance trip with one overnight and glacier travel. I added elastic to carry my helmet on the exterior and rigged something with the gear loops to carry an ice axe but really hope Black Diamond improves on the flaws above for future iterations. Should be minor revisions that can make a big difference in convenience and ease of use without much of a compromise on weight.

Fantastic bag and quality as always from the superior alpine hiking and climbing company. 100% recommended!!!

I recently used this pack for a hut-to-hut TMB. The volume was right for a couple days of clothes, rain gear, water and lunch. The comfort was very good — the wide hip belt and running vest straps were all great. Reverse pull on the hip belt is nice and shoulder adjustments and load lifters all work well (not sure the load lifters really do much though). Maybe a little hot on the back compared to a more traditional pack, and a little floppy too, but that's the pros/cons of a running pack. The large stretch pocket on the back was also very nice as were the two zipped pockets on the top of the pack (one inside and one outside). However, the rest of the pockets really left me scratching my head. There are four pockets set far back on the hip belt, but two of them are so shallow I can't really figure out what they are meant to be used for. They weren't secure enough for anything I cared about, even small items; maybe for a packet of goo or something? The other two are a bit bigger, but still kind of strange with the way they hit the pack, and pretty borderline for holding a Smartwater bottle or similar. Shoulder harness pockets are also kind of odd — the zip one barely fit my phone — and I have an iPhone mini! And the others were also quite small and not useful for much other than stashing the tip of my hydration bladder hose. And the compression system is for the birds, hard to loosen, hard to tighten, and often getting snagged on stuff. Overall a mixed bag (no pun intended). I wanted to like it, and some things about it are nice, but I'm not sure it would be the first thing I would reach for again.

First impressions are very good. Great fitting and very light. I do wish there was more straps and ways to secure things on the outside of the pack but understand with a pack so light, durability would be in question with things hanging off of it. Overall very much like the pack and excited to use it.

Trying to love and use this pack for longer trail runs/hikes in the Rockies. I’m 6’2” and 180lbs, slim body type, and ordered a size large as per their torso measurements. Not sure if I'm just not used to bigger packs anymore, but it feels very long and narrow. Tested it out on a 25km day and while I was comfortable for most of the day with ample space for a soft flask, water reservoir, snacks and multiple layers, the run down had the bag bouncing more than I’d like. The bag seemed to fold in weird along the non-padded section between the hip belt and upper back support (there's no mesh here so it might be part of the design) which seemed to put extra pressure on my shoulder blades. I have a 32” waist and the hip belt was sliding around a bit being cinched down almost fully. The shoulder straps were also fully cinched to the point that the buckles almost dug into my sides and the shoulder straps still had room to move around going downhill. Maybe I should have sized down with my build, and that's the only reason I can't give 5 stars. Otherwise, BD build quality is top notch, functionality and design are a 9/10 with loads of pockets and storage options. Worth giving it a shot!

I am so happy we found this product through Black Diamond. The functionality and quality are top notch. I will recommend your products to all my friends. Ordering was very easy and the pack showed up right on time. Thanks again

Quality materials and good seams on the zippers. This pack should last a good long time with the construction they out into it. I’ve had some trouble with water bottles staying in the side pockets. So far I’ve had the Core water and Vitamin water bottles in there and they tend to fall out. Particularly when leaning forward if you are walking up a good incline or when bending over to pick something up off the ground. This might not be the case with all bottle shapes and sizes but so far I’ve had these two in on and they both liked to fall out. It’s super comfortable and carry’s well on your back. It’s hot without a space between your back and the pack but I opted not to go for something with a trampoline back because I like how they carry better for me and comfort. All in all I’m happy with it and it’s my go to pack for day hikes and overnight treks.

This pack is fantastic -- perfect meld of a running vest and a larger pack!
